Each of these could be done on purpose depending on what you are attempting to do with the shot. This step will also set the tempo of the approach. This is a vital part of your bowling shot. The speed of your arrival will settle the speed of the ball going down the lane.

The second step is the starting of the pendulum motion. The swing has to be a natural motion. It is leading that you allow the ball to fall without forcing it into motion. On this step you will allow the ball to fall and begin a natural swing motion. The second and third steps kind of run into each other, and the pendulum can be dissimilar for everyone.

The third step is the continuation of the pendulum motion to the back and starting back towards the lane. It is leading that you do this without speeding or slowing the ball down in any way (easier said than done!). Just allow the ball to flow with gravity and continue in a natural motion toward the lane.

The fourth and final step is the slide and corollary through. You need to be especially true to not overdo this step. If you throw the ball to hard, it will probably stay to the right of the head pin and you will probably leave pins. If you throw the ball to soft, it will probably end up on the left of the head pin, or worse, through the middle of the rack (a split, ahhh!). I can't emphasize how leading it is to keep the motion flat and natural.

5 Step Approach

The 5 step arrival consists of the 4 step arrival with an further step at the beginning.

The first step in the 5 step arrival is a speed step. It is used to set the pace for the shot. Usually the ball doesn't move during this step. This allows for one less thing to worry about in the first step of your arrival (see first step of 4 step approach). A lot of bowlers use this step to setup the shot. It is a starter step that you can use to make sure that your speed is what you want it to be.

The other 4 steps of this arrival are the same (more or less) as the 4 step arrival outlined above. Some bowlers concentrate the fifth step into their arrival and make the 5 step arrival one flat motion.

Which one should I use?

The 5 step arrival is used by most higher midpoint bowlers. This is not to say that you can't be a higher midpoint bowler if you don't use it, but you will find most higher midpoint bowlers do use it. That said, the 4 step arrival is the one to start with if you are just starting to bowl. The 4 step arrival is used by just about every bowler when they begin to bowl. It is much easier to do than the 5 step, and you can always adjust to the 5 step arrival when you feel more comfortable with your arrival and are developing your own style (see my article, improve Your Score With Style for more information on establishing your own style).

You can bake this ginger cake in one of two ways depending on who it's for.

You can use either 2 loaf tins greased and lined (or ready made linings as it is much easier) or use 1 18cm round greased and lined deep tin. The amounts are the same for both ways but the baking times will be sLightly different. The 2 loaf tins take about 50 minutes and the deep tin takes about 1hr.

1. Preheat your oven to 180c/160c for fan assisted ovens/gas mark 4.
2. Grease and line your chosen tin(s).
3. Make sure the rack in the oven is in the middle of the oven to make sure the ginger cake is evenly baked.

Ingredients

8oz/225g self raising flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tablespoon of ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground mixed spice
4oz/125g butter cut into cubes (plus extra for greasing the tins)
4oz/125g dark muscavado sugar
4oz/125g black treacle
4oz/125g golden syrup
9 fl oz/250ml whole milk
3oz/85g drained stem ginger, grated finely
1 egg

Method

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and all the dry spices in a large bowl. Do not be tempted not to sift the flour, as the bicarbonate of soda will stay in clumps and not disperse through the cake.

Add the butter and rub it onto the flour compound with your hands until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Put the muscavado sugar,treacle,syrup and milk into a large saucepan and put it on a low heat, keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved, then turn up the heat and bring the compound to just below boiling point so it does not burn the sugars or it will be bitter, take off the heat.

Mix in the grated stem ginger into the flour compound thoroughly coating it well.

Carefully pour in the treacle mix into the flour compound (it will bubble as there is bicarbonate of soda in the mix) stir as you go and mix with a wooden spoon.

Break in the egg and beat the compound well.

Pour the ginger cake compound into the ready tin(s)

Bake the cake for colse to 50 minutes and check it by pushing a clean skewer into the middle of the cake until it comes out clean.

When cooked leave it in the tin(s)until cool then turn out.

Keep the cake(s) in the paper that you have baked them in but put a clean one on as well for presentation, the cake(s) will keep for about 2 weeks if put in an airtight holder or if you prefer you can freeze them by wrapping in greaseproof paper then cling-film or large food bag, it will keep well for colse to a month.

Glue and nail in the bottom piece.

Black peppercorns are a must in every spice rack, and most come in jars with grinders attached, which is great news if you don't have a pepper grinder yet. Cook them first with ginger root if you are using it and also chilli powder, as these spices emit their flavour best when they are fried a small first (with onion and garlic thrown in after a minute).

Nutmeg is a good expanding to a creamy sauce, or a cheese sauce although ¼ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg goes a long way. Whole nutmegs keep for a few months, so one will last you a long time.

Cinnamon and cassia bark can also keep for some time, and can be used in sweet or savoury dishes. A stick of cinnamon can be added to stewed fruit or to a meat dish such as Greek stifado which requires cinnamon and allspice. Allspice is a small used spice, but is a useful substitute for juniper berries, and goes well with meat dishes, adding an extra depth of flavour.

These are the most coarse spices found in spice racks. However there are many more spices which are growing in popularity, such as grains of paradise. If you have ground garam masala in your spice rack, possibly you should think of manufacture your own when you need it. You can experiment with separate quantities of the spices and make one to your own taste.

1) Cayenne: Not all tastebuds can cope the heat of this spice. It can unmistakably cause burns in the mouth and throat. 6) Ginger: This is another ingredient to pumpkin pie, but it is mostly used fresh in Asian cuisine. Egg flower soup and stir fry may include some fresh ginger. If you have a sore throat, you may want to use caution because it is spicy. another use for ginger is nausea, especially from morning sickness and motion sickness.

8) Parsley: Italian cuisine loves parsley, as do many others. It goes with salads, fish and chicken. It can also be used as part of a mustard/parsley crust for pork loin roasts. Herbalists use it primarily as a diuretic, something that pulls fluids from your system. If you're pregnant, don't use it in healthful amounts as it may cause uterine contractions.
9) Rosemary: If you like this herb, try using stems from it as skewers for shrimp and chicken. It is very strong, however. 1. Make sure to let the cake cool the permissible whole of time.

If the cake is sticking to the cake pan, the first thing to look at is whether or not you're letting it cool sufficiently. Most recipes advise cooling the cake on a rack about 5 to 15 minutes, then running a knife around the edge before turning it out of the pan. Just by taking these steps, you can preclude your cakes from ever sticking.

2. Use a mixture of equal parts flour, vegetable or canola oil, and shortening.

If you're unsure what to grease your cake pans with, try the above mixture. Blend the ingredients fully and use a pastry brush to apply to your cake pans. Once the cake is done baking, you can then place the cake pan on a cooling rack. Allow it to cool as recommended in tip whole 1 before removing it.

3. Cut a piece of parchment paper and line your cake pan with it, and dab some butter under and on top of the paper.

This is a neat trick I learned from a good friend, and seems to work flawlessly every time. It's like "insurance" that the cake will come out. When you take off the cake it should come out of the cake pan quite indubitably paper and all. Then, all you have to do is peel the paper from the cake.

4. Don't let the cake cool too long.

Some bakers may be letting their cakes cool too much. Most cakes should be reMoved from their cake pans after 5 to 15 minutes, but certainly within 30 minutes of cooling on a rack. Anything after that may be detrimental. However, some recipes call for letting your cakes cool a bit longer. If that's the case, then just succeed the formula instructions. Unless the formula calls for it, stick to tip whole 1.

5. Use aluminum foil to line your cake pans.

This is similar to using parchment paper, but is a more cost productive alternative for those prudent bakers out there. Aside from being cheaper, you can also mold foil a tiny tighter to the pan than with parchment paper. Foil works best for round and quadrilateral cake pans. You can line your pans with foil enough to reach up and over the sides. You may even use the extra foil as a type of "handle" to help lift the cake out of the pan.

I know how frustrating it can be to have your cakes stick to your cake pans. You can now use my 5 tips in any mixture that makes sense to ensure that your cakes never stick to your cake pans again.
