Life in the Colonial era was very separate to life as we know it today, and food is a prime example of how things have changed. The Colonial habitancy did not have convenience foods like jello powder to make jello recipes. Their desserts were made from scratch.
They used their woodcutting knife for cutting their meat and vegetables. Cooking was a slow process and there were no grocery stores to make life easier. Butter and cheese were homemade. Corn was popular in the Colonial era, as were fruits and vegetables.
Spice Rack
People living close to the sea would enjoy seafood such as lobsters and clams. Beverages included beer, milk, apple cider, and pear cider. Recipes were known as "receipts" and rosewater, coconut, molasses, caraway seeds, lemon, and almonds featured in a lot of baked recipes. They would dry spices near the fire and then powder them, to use in Colonial food recipes.
This is obviously very separate to the life we know today. For us, it is easy to head down to the store and pick up convenience foods and readymade meals. If you correlate our diet to the Colonial diet however, you will see that most of their recipes were a lot healthier than modern favorites.
Recipe for Brown Sugar Cookies
What you will need:
1/2 teaspoon soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup shortening 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup sour cream 3/4 cup raisins 3/4 cup chopped nuts 1 egg How to make them:
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Mix the sugar, shortening, egg, salt and nutmeg, then add the sour cream, baking powder, soda and flour. Stir the blend well. Add the raisins and nuts and drop the mixture, a spoonful at a time, on to a greased baking sheet. Bake the brown sugar cookies for about fourteen minutes and cool them on a wire rack.
Recipe for Hobnails
What you will need:
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 beaten egg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup raisins 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup Light brown sugar 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup shortening How to make them:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Cream the sugar with the shortening, then add the egg and vanilla extract. Sift the cinnamon, salt, sugar, flour, and baking soda into the mixture, and then stir in the raisins. Make small balls with the blend and put them on a greased cookie sheet. Bake them for about fourteen minutes, and then let them cool on a wire rack.
Recipe for Applejacks
What you will need:
1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup Light brown sugar 1 1/3 cups all purpose four 1 cup chopped apples (not peeled) 1 egg 1/2 cup shortening How to make them:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Concentrate the sugar and shortening, then add the egg. Sift the salt, nutmeg, baking soda, sugar, and flour into the mixture, beating it well. Add the chopped apples and make small balls with the mixture. Arrange them on a greased cookie sheet and bake for about fourteen minutes. Cool them on a wire rack.
